Today, August 17th, is National Nonprofit Day. Here is what I found out:
August 17, 1894, was when the Tariff Act became law and gave exemptions for charitable institutions and nonprofit organizations. Today, we celebrate National Nonprofit Day by recognizing nonprofits and the impact of their world-changing work in our local communities and on a global scale.
Why does National Nonprofit Day matter? For organizations like Pulse, we have to constantly prove our worth. People assume we are affiliated with a hospital or health system. Our allegiance is to patients and their families, not a healthcare system. Plus, we want to speak to people before they enter the healthcare system so they can be better prepared.
We respond to phone calls from patients and their families attempting to navigate the complex healthcare system. Our advisors — medical professionals, pharmacists and advocates — are truly a deep resource of information helping us to help you.
We have developed a Patient Safety Advocate Academy where people can learn what they can do to be a professional advocate, or a caregiver
We offer three programs a month, run by volunteers committed to educating the public, caregivers, and professional patient advocates.
TakeCHARGE: 5 Steps to Safer Health Care Representatives from thirteen organizations meet on Fridays to plan TakeCHARGE: 5 Steps to Safer Health Care. While the public in general may not be aware of patient safety, these five steps lay out how the public can get better outcomes in their care.
So, as we enter our 25th year at Pulse Center for Patient Safety Education & Advocacy, here are four ways you can help support our work:
- Make a donation: whether $5 or $5,000, it is important to us that you care enough to donate.
- Volunteer — we have a long list of ways: help with a fundraiser, help plan events and programs, donate your talent just one hour a week or a month (social media, marketing, legal, business advice, grant writing, introductions to corporations).
- Host a program: By sharing our information we can be saving lives of people as they plan for a hospitalization.
- Attend our programs and become an educated person before you end up in the healthcare system.
As a small nonprofit with a wide reach, we need you, before you need us.
Take advantage of National Nonprofit Day and join in our work to educate, advocate and support patients and families!
